| Abstract |
| A rapid method of analysis of sillimanite samples for silica, iron,
alumina and titania has been described. 0.25 gm of sample is decomposed
by fusing with a mixture of 0.4 gm of diboron trioxide and
1.3 gm of sodium carbonate followed by a second fusion after adding
1.7 gm of more sodium carbonate. The melt is taken up with water,
acidified with sulphuric acid and made up to 250 ml, making the final
acidity 2N.
Silica is determined spectrophotometrically as yellow silicomolybdate;
the sum total of iron, alumina and titania is determined by
complexing with EDTA in acetate buffered medium followed by back
titration with zinc acetate with screened xylenol orange as indicator.
Iron and titania are determined spectrophotometrically by the respective
formation of 1, 10-phenanthroline and hydrogen peroxo complex,
and alumina is determined by difference.
Soda and potash are determined in a separate sample by decomposition
with hydrofluoric perchloric acid mixture and the determination
carried out by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Though
sillimanite and corundum are not decomposed by this method, results
are good, because alkali metals, usually present in the associated
minerals only, are quantitaitvely brought into solution. |
