| Abstract |
| Four diffirent samples of pyrophyllite were tested for their various properties. Possibility of their
utilization in making casting pit rifractories and other highly thermal shock resistant type of
bodies like saggers, combustion tubes etc. was investigated. It was observed that raw pyrophyllite
could favourably replace clay grog by 30 to 60% in fireclay refractories with better volume stability
on heating even up to 1400°C. As small as 10% of it helped in improving the reheat change and the
thermal shock resistant characteristics of fireclay rifractories. Tubes produced by slip casting from
bodies containing 60 to 70% of pyrophyllite, on firing to about 1475° became almost impervious
to air and at the same time showed good thermal shock resistance. These appear to be suitable
· as combustion tubes and due to their low power factor at high frequency, may be used as insulators
in carbon resistors. |
