Abstract
AjtM· discussing some of the clwracte?"istics of the vitreous state in general, special 1·equi1·ements of glass suitable for chemical wa1·e are considM·ed. The decrease of allcali content necessary to impart chemical endurance necessarily raises Glasses made of pure silica dumbility and better thermal the tempe1·ature of melting. are the best, no doubt; bnt this requires a temperature of a11out 2000° wlziqh is difficult and costly to obtain fo1· l(1rge scale manufacture. This also necessitates the use of mo1·e efficient 1'1'fractories. Increased viscosity of such melts malces their manipulation more d~f!icult and adds to the cost.
