Abstract
The manufacture .of glass beads originated in Czechoslovakia in 1815. The town of Gablon:t is connected with the glass industry smce the middl..: ages. From an insignificant village more than 150 years ago, it became the principal town in Bohemia, engaged in the ornamental glass industry specialising in beads, buttons and imitation pearls. At its height of prosperity, bead exports covered over 90 to 95% of its total glass production. With the advent of mechanisation in the glass of industry, the technique of bead manufacture underwent vast improvements from a slow hand process to the adoption of various intricate machines, tools and mechanical devices resulting in larger production anJ flooding of world markets with Czechoslavak beads.
