Abstract
Glasses with composition xLi2O-(50–x)Bi2O3-10ZnO-40B2O3 have been prepared by conventional melt quenching method. Density and molar volume decrease with increase in Li2O content. The IR and Raman studies indicate that these glasses are made up of [BiO3] [BiO6], [BO3] and [BO4] basic structural units. Li2O acts as a network modifier and modifies the glass structure. The optical absorption studies reveal that optical band gap decreases with Li2O content whereas Urbach energy (E) shows an increasing trend. The metallization criterion is found to be in the range 0.368-0.386, indicating the suitability of these glasses for non-linear optical properties.
