increased in the recent past d is likely to go up further as
progress is made in their processing and understanding
their mechanical behaviour. Low reliability, as reflected in

limit the usc of alumina ceramics in more demanding
structural applications. The coarse grained aluminas display
the phenomenon of crack bridging which leads to
greater flaw tolerance and is actively being researched at
