| Abstract |
| Beach sand sillimanite was subjected to suitable powder treatments
and the sintering behaviour of the resultant narrow sizegraded
sillimanite powders as well as mixtures of these in various
proportions was studied at different temperatures between 1400.
and 1700"C and soaking periods o(30 mins to 16 hours.
Fine particle sillimanite (median dia 4.5 mm) compacts underwent
faster densification. At 1700°C and 4 hrs soaking, these
compacts sintered to a density value of 2.72 gm.cm"3 with negli·
gible open porosity. No densification was observed in the
compacts of coarse sillimanite particles (median dia 130 mm)
under similar conditions. The sintering of binary mixtures exhi·
bited densification values between those of the end members, i.e.
compacts comprising entirely one particle size fraction. Grain
boundary diffusion was found to be the operative mechanism of
material transport for sintering. |
