Abstract
A statistical analysis of tensile strength data of optical fibres in the gauge length varying from 0.6 m to 20 m has been made. The analysis shows that in most cases the data can be described by the beta distribution with lower and higher strength portion of the population attributed to extrinsic and intrinsic factors respectively. A modification to the Weibull type of flaw distribution has also been suggested for analysing the strength distribution. The function provides upper and lower strength limits and is characterized by two shape and two location parameters. The long length strengths predicted from this fnnction are in close agreement with the experimental data.
